This measure responds to accusations from the Peruvian Executive, which points to the Islamic republic as being responsible for fostering violence and exacerbating instability in the Middle East.

Reasons behind the diplomatic decision

Through an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru detailed the reasons that led to this institutional breakdown. Among the key points highlighted are:

Constant obstruction of the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), preventing access to nuclear facilities to verify potential weapons development.

Concern over the severe restrictions imposed by the Iranian regime and the disruptions to international trade in the Strait of Hormuz recorded since March 2026.

Reports on the democratic deterioration in Iran, including the repression of peaceful protests, attacks on freedom of the press, and systemic discrimination against women and girls.

The Government of Peru has expressed on various occasions its condemnation and deep concern regarding the delicate situation that threatens stability in the Middle East and which seriously affects international peace and security.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru

Scope of the measure

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry clarified that, although diplomatic relations have been severed, this step does not imply the cessation of consular ties. The objective of maintaining this channel is to guarantee the protection and assistance of citizens of both States, complying with the essential functions provided for in current international treaties.

The notification of this decision has already been formally communicated to the Embassy of Iran in Ecuador, a legation that also managed matters corresponding to Peruvian territory.

Peru breaks diplomatic relations with Iran amid escalating tensions The Government of Peru, under the administration of Keiko Fujimori, has made the firm decision to sever diplomatic relations with Iran.
