Mexican activist Alma Rosa Rojo Medina, founder of the collective Voces Unidas por la Vida, was the victim of an armed attack this Saturday in the city of Culiac\u00e1n, Sinaloa. The incident, which has caused deep consternation in the country, occurred while the region is going through a complex security crisis.<\/p>\n\n
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sinaloa has formally initiated an investigation under the classification of attempted femicide. Authorities are working to clarify the facts and determine if the attack is directly linked to the humanitarian work that Rojo Medina carries out in the search for missing persons.<\/p>\n\n
According to official reports, the attack took place in the Esthela Ortiz de Toledo neighborhood, where armed subjects intercepted and fired upon the vehicle in which the activist was traveling. Another woman was also wounded in the same incident, who, according to local reports, is the daughter of the collective’s founder.<\/p>\n\n
The Secretariat of Public Security of Sinaloa confirmed that both victims were transported to a hospital. Currently, they are reported to be stable and are being kept under the protection of the authorities to ensure their physical integrity while the investigations proceed.<\/p>\n\n

Various search collectives, led by Sabuesas Guerreras, have raised their voices to demand an exhaustive, transparent, and expeditious investigation that allows for the capture of those materially and intellectually responsible for the attack. Likewise, they have demanded immediate protection measures for Rojo Medina and the rest of the members of the search groups in the region.<\/p>\n\n
This attack adds to a highly dangerous scenario in Sinaloa. Since September 2024, the state has been experiencing an escalation of violence stemming from the internal struggle between the factions known as Los Chapitos and La Mayiza, following the capture of Ismael ‘el Mayo’ Zambada on U.S. soil. This crisis has increased the risk for human rights defenders who, faced with state inaction, carry out fieldwork to locate human remains.<\/p>\n\n
