The massive destruction of bridges and roads has left multiple communities completely isolated, forcing emergency teams to use helicopters to deliver necessary humanitarian aid to those affected.

Lila Pieters Yahia, the international organization’s resident coordinator in the country, confirmed that land access to the hardest-hit municipalities is currently impossible. Given this situation, the Nepalese government has deployed more than 13,000 security personnel to the affected districts to accelerate search and rescue operations.

A devastating toll

Fatalities: 389 bodies recovered so far.

Missing: 910 people without contact, including 517 foreign citizens.

Structural damage: More than 35 bridges destroyed and 40 kilometers of roads disabled.

The outlook is uncertain for hundreds of families, as authorities fear that many of the people reported missing may have been trapped under the mud or swept away by the strong water currents.

The absolute priority is the location of the missing and immediate medical assistance to the survivors, in a scenario where the electricity supply has been reduced by 10 percent in the impacted areas.

International response and latent risks

The threat persists due to warnings about possible new flooding of the Bhote Koshi River, so an urgent call has been issued for residents and tourists to stay away from the riverbanks. In response to the magnitude of the disaster, 2 million dollars have been released from the Central Emergency Response Fund to cover basic needs such as shelter, drinking water, and healthcare.

For its part, the United States has activated protocols to locate its citizens in the area, estimating that between 50 and 60 Americans could have been in the impacted areas at the time of the disaster. In addition, the U.S. administration announced $500,000 in aid to support relief efforts.

Tragedy also reaches the Tibet Autonomous Region in China, bringing the combined death toll to 392 and the number of missing persons at the regional level to nearly 1,400. Various nations have expressed their solidarity with the people of Nepal and China, while rescue teams continue to work tirelessly under extreme conditions to save lives amidst the rubble and mud.

Humanitarian crisis in Nepal: Rescue efforts intensify after devastating floods Nepal is going through a critical situation following a devastating flood that has left a tragic toll and severely damaged infrastructure.
