This name has generated curiosity due to the recent physical passing of the legendary singer Dolly Parton; however, meteorological authorities have clarified that there is no connection between the two events.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is keeping a close watch on an area of atmospheric instability located south of the Cape Verde Islands, off the African coast. According to current models, the system presents favorable conditions for gradual development, with the potential to evolve into a tropical depression over the course of the coming week.

How are cyclone names assigned?

The naming of meteorological phenomena is not random. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) establishes lists years in advance, which are reused in six-year cycles. This alphabetical system, which alternates between male and female names, has the primary objective of facilitating the communication of alerts and the rapid identification of systems by the public.

Names are selected by seeking brevity, familiarity in the affected regions, and simple pronunciation. In cases where a cyclone causes catastrophic damage or loss of life, the name is permanently retired from the list out of respect and to avoid future confusion.

Alofoke Deportes

2026 Season Review

To date, cyclonic activity in the Atlantic has been constant. Before the name Dolly is assigned, the 2026 season has already recorded three named systems:

Arthur: Formed in June and made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Bertha: Produced significant rainfall in Louisiana and Texas during July.

Cristobal: Reached storm category in early August before dissipating.

If the system currently monitored by the NHC off the coast of Africa manages to consolidate and its maximum sustained winds reach 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour), it will be officially classified as a tropical storm, thus receiving the name Dolly, strictly following the pre-established alphabetical order.

For the moment, meteorologists continue to monitor the evolution of the shower and thunderstorm activity, waiting to see how the system organizes in the coming days.

Dolly: The name that will mark the next tropical storm in the Atlantic The Atlantic hurricane season remains active and the next storm to reach the necessary category will be named Dolly.
