This Tuesday afternoon, the community of Santiago de los Caballeros was in mourning following the confirmation of the death of Denny Núñez, a 16-year-old teenager who had been in critical condition at the Doctor Arturo Grullón Children’s Hospital. The young man had been admitted days earlier with a gunshot wound to the skull, the result of a violent armed attack in the Nueva York Chiquito sector.

Dr. Alicia Rivas, director of the health center, reported that, despite the medical team’s efforts, the minor did not survive due to the severity of the injuries caused by the projectile. The location of the bullet in a high-risk area had prevented surgeons from performing an intervention to extract it, just as the specialists had warned the young man’s relatives.

He says he can’t because it’s inside the skull. If he can’t, God knows what might happen.
Anibelkis Gómez, the teenager’s aunt

Incident details

According to the testimony of his relatives, the tragic event occurred when the victim was in front of his home in the company of his father. At that moment, a stranger burst onto the scene firing at a third party; unfortunately, one of the projectiles struck the teenager, who had no connection whatsoever to the conflict.

The Núñez family has raised their voice to demand justice, emphasizing that the minor was a collateral victim of an aggression directed at someone else. “A child is a child,” his aunt expressed with indignation, questioning the insecurity that allowed for this fatal outcome.

Ongoing research

- The National Police have taken over the investigation to identify the person responsible for the shooting.

- Local authorities have promised to deepen the investigation to clarify the facts.

- The case has generated great consternation and a widespread call to the authorities so that the crime does not go unpunished.

As investigations progress, the society of Santiago hopes that the law enforcement institution manages to locate the aggressor and bring him to justice, thus providing some peace to the victim’s family members during this difficult time.
