The iconic Madonna, who began her legendary career at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 with an unforgettable performance of “Like a Virgin,” makes history again by topping the list of nominees for the 2026 edition. With a total of 11 nominations, the artist reaches a personal record, reaffirming her absolute relevance in the music industry.

This is the first time since 1998 that the star has led the nominations. Back then, Madonna took home the award for Video of the Year thanks to “Ray of Light,” a feat she also achieved in 1990 with the iconic “Vogue.” In both previous editions, she accumulated nine nominations, now surpassing that mark with her 11 current mentions.

The premier category, Video of the Year, stands out this year for its long-form format. Madonna’s short film, “Confessions II – The Film,” with 14 minutes of footage, seeks to take home the main award. This trend of extended pieces has been successful recently, with wins by Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande in previous years.

Taylor Swift takes second place with nine nominations, adding to her record of 30 Moon Person awards. The landscape of nominees this year reflects a strong female presence, as seven of the eight artists with the highest number of nominations are women, including Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter, who each have seven nominations.

The absence of hip-hop and Latin music artists in the Artist of the Year category is notable, marking an unusual milestone since the creation of these categories in recent years.
