In an act of profound gratitude and humility, taekwondo medalist Bernardo Pie surprised those present during an athlete recognition ceremony in Monte Plata. The athlete decided to hand over the entire RD$50,000 incentive he received for his outstanding participation in the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games to his first trainer, master Héctor Rodríguez, popularly known as “La Culebra”.

The event, which celebrated the effort of the province’s athletes and coaches, had the support of local figures and entities such as the Bayaguana Sports Union, led by Isaac Ogando, the El Progreso Cooperative, Governor Rafaela Javier Gomera, and the director of the Airport Department, Víctor Pichardo.

Perhaps the master did not have the opportunity to sit by my side during my competition at the JCCSD 2026, but he did something much more important: he was by my side when everything was just beginning.
Bernardo Pie, taekwondo athlete.

A recognition of grassroots training

For the medalist, this gesture represents not just financial aid, but an act of justice toward the person he considers the fundamental pillar of his career. As the athlete explained, teacher Rodríguez was the one who instilled in him the essential values of discipline, respect, and perseverance that define his current trajectory.

Pie emphasized that the success achieved on the great international stages has its roots in the silent work of his mentor during his formative years in Bayaguana. For the athlete, the financial contribution also belongs to the one who believed in his potential long before the medals and public recognition arrived.

An example for the sports community

Bernardo Pie’s action has been widely praised by the sports community, highlighting the importance of valuing the work of the coaches who accompany athletes from their beginnings. His decision underscores the relevance of maintaining gratitude toward those who, with effort and dedication, build the foundations for the future leaders of national sports.
