According to official data from the Ministry of Health, the country has recorded 2,821 cumulative cases up to epidemiological week 30, which represents a 25% increase compared to the 2,113 infections reported during the same period in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the total figure, 49 people have been diagnosed with dengue with warning signs, requiring closer clinical monitoring. As of August 10, six patients remained hospitalized in centers such as the San Rafael Hospital in Alajuela, the V\u00edctor Manuel Sanabria Hospital, the Carlos Luis Valverde Vega Hospital, and the Women&#8217;s Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geographic distribution and upward trend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of the disease is not uniform throughout the national territory. The North Central region leads in absolute number of notifications with 781 cases. However, when analyzing the incidence rate, the Central Pacific region records the highest impact, with 192.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chorotega: 431 cases.<\/li>\n<li>Huetar Caribe: 332 cases.<\/li>\n<li>Other regions such as Central South, Brunca, Huetar North, Central West, and Central East show lower figures, but maintain a constant presence of the virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Surveillance Directorate highlights that the increase has been abrupt since week 20, reaching a maximum peak in week 29. This behavior is mainly attributed to the start of the rainy season and the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A challenge for all of Central America<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation in Costa Rica is a reflection of a regional trend. Central America has experienced sustained growth in the transmission of this disease over the last decade. Factors such as accelerated urbanization, deficits in sanitation systems, and population growth have facilitated the expansion of the vector. Neighboring countries such as Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala have also reported notable increases in their official records during the first months of the current year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Home prevention is the fundamental axis for containing dengue. Controlling the transmitting mosquito, which breeds in stagnant water, depends directly on the actions we take inside and around our homes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential prevention measures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To curb the spread, health authorities are making an urgent call to the population to implement the following control measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eliminate or turn over any object that can accumulate water, such as tires, buckets, bottles, and flowerpots.<\/li>\n<li>Keep water tanks and drinking water containers tightly covered.<\/li>\n<li>Change the water in animal troughs and vases every three days.<\/li>\n<li>Periodically clean gutters and drains to prevent rainwater stagnation.<\/li>\n<li>Install screens or mosquito nets on doors and windows, and use repellents.<\/li>\n<li>Promote constant cleaning of yards and gardens to remove useless objects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing this problem requires a combination of strict epidemiological surveillance, timely clinical care, and, above all, a collective awareness to eliminate mosquito breeding sites in every community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alert due to increase in dengue cases in Costa Rica during 2026 Costa Rica is facing a significant increase in the incidence of dengue so far in 2026.
