In the Dominican Republic, a group of researchers has reached a milestone by publishing the first national study exploring the relationship between the gut microbiota and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, shedding light on how our internal health could influence brain aging.<\/p>\n\n<p>The research, led by geriatrician Mart\u00edn Medrano, featured the collaboration of experts from Cl\u00ednica Corominas and the Spanish company Darwin Bioprospecting Excellence. The results were published in the prestigious journal Dementia &amp; Neuropsychologia, consolidating a significant breakthrough for neuroscience in Latin America.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Research details<\/h2>\n\n<p>The analysis focused on 88 older Dominican adults, divided into three groups: people diagnosed with Alzheimer&#8217;s, patients with mild cognitive impairment, and healthy adults. Although the overall bacterial diversity was similar among the participants, scientists detected specific microorganisms linked to the decline of cognitive abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The study highlights that local diet has a direct impact on the composition of the microbiota.<\/li><li>The consumption of fruits and vegetables such as mango, lettuce, and carrots was linked to bacteria considered beneficial.<\/li><li>The recurrent consumption of longaniza and ultra-processed products was associated with less healthy bacterial profiles.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Most of the knowledge about microbiota and Alzheimer&#8217;s comes from Europe, the United States, and Asia. Our study shows that the Dominican population possesses unique characteristics that must be investigated and that diet, environment, and other regional factors could influence brain health through the gut microbiota.<\/p><cite>Doctor Mart\u00edn Medrano, lead researcher.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do these results mean for the future?<\/h2>\n\n<p>It is important to highlight that the study authors clarify that the current findings do not suggest that a specific food is a cure or direct cause of Alzheimer&#8217;s.
