The Dominican Republic has marked a turning point in its recent history by officially reaching the Zero Hunger goal. This achievement, confirmed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), places the country off the Hunger Map by reducing the prevalence of undernourishment to less than 2.5%, a remarkable figure when compared to the 8.3% recorded in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The announcement was made during the opening of the XI Meeting of the Regional Network of Public Food Supply and Marketing Systems of Latin America and the Caribbean (SPAA 2026), held in Santo Domingo. President Luis Abinader highlighted that this progress is the result of firm political will, sustained public policies, and close coordination between the Government, producers, and various actors in the agri-food chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commitment to resilience and regional cooperation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Despite the success achieved, the Dominican leader emphasized the need not to lower one’s guard. Faced with global challenges such as climate change, geopolitical crises, and volatility in supply chains, Abinader advocated for strengthening institutions and supply systems. The goal is to protect current achievements and ensure that the population maintains permanent access to quality food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The regional meeting, organized by the Price Stabilization Institute (INESPRE) and the FAO, brings together delegations from various countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange best practices. During the event, the following key pillars for the country’s success were highlighted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- National production:<\/strong> Currently, the country produces 87% of the food it consumes.<\/li>\n
- Support for producers:<\/strong> Strengthening family farming and constant backing for small and medium-sized producers.<\/li>\n
- Public procurement:<\/strong> Strategic use of the State to boost rural economies and ensure internal supply.<\/li>\n
- International cooperation:<\/strong> The value of sharing successful experiences with allied nations to implement more efficient policies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
Rodrigo Casta\u00f1eda, FAO representative in the country, congratulated the Dominican Government for this milestone, stressing that the success has not been circumstantial, but the product of sustained economic growth and clear institutional leadership. For his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Francisco Oliverio Espaillat, and the director of INESPRE, David Herrera D\u00edaz, agreed that the priority given to food security has been the transformative axis that today allows Dominican families to have greater nutritional stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
