This agreement will allow both parties to officially announce that they have reached a tentative agreement.

The terms were verbally agreed upon by both parties early Wednesday morning, after eight days and more than 100 hours of negotiation in Midtown Manhattan, New York. The agreement is pending ratification by the WNBA Board of Governors and the WNBPA player body, which could take a few more weeks.

The agreement is one of the most transformative labor agreements ever reached in major professional sports.

League Press Release

In the center of the new agreement is a revenue-sharing model that the league describes as “the first comprehensive revenue-sharing model in the history of women’s professional sports.” The league projects that the new system will provide more than a billion dollars in salaries and benefits for the players over the course of the agreement.

The salary cap for the 2026 season will be $7 million and will change annually based on the growth of the league and team revenues; it is expected to exceed $10 million by the end of the agreement.

The maximum salary is set at $1.4 million in 2026 and is expected to grow to over $2.4 million in 2032. The average salary is expected to be $583,000 in 2026 and exceed $1 million in 2032. Minimum salaries will range, depending on years of service, between $270,000 and $300,000 in 2026 and are expected to range between $340,000 and $380,000 in 2032.

According to the new agreement, existing rookie scale contracts will be adjusted upwards. Upcoming rookie scale contracts will also experience large salary increases, and the number 1 pick of 2026 is expected to earn $500,000.

The agreement will also require teams to have 12 players on the roster, and they can now also have two additional spots for developing players that will not count towards the salary cap.

The 2026 season will continue to have 44 matches, and then the schedule will expand to 50 matches in 2027 and 2028 and then to 52 matches from 2029 to 2032.

The new collective bargaining agreement also addressed the housing issue, which emerged as a critical point in the negotiations after the league initially did not include it in its proposals. Teams have provided housing since the league’s first collective bargaining agreement in 1999.

According to the new agreement, housing will be provided to all players in 2026, 2027 and 2028, and to players earning $500,000 or less in 2029 and 2030. Housing will be provided to new developing players each year.

Other highlights of the agreement, according to the statement, include:

Charter air travel for the entire league codified

Improved standards for team facilities requiring teams to provide enhanced training and treatment resources

Expanded team personnel requirements, including access to additional doctors, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, physical therapists and massage therapists, and nutritionists.

Salary cap exceptions for injured or pregnant players

Commercial consent of pregnant players

Substantial increases in bonus compensation for all league and postseason awards; starting in 2027, bonuses will increase at the rate of salary cap growth

Expanded first-class travel accommodations for players at all league events

Significant increases in team contributions to players’ 401(k) retirement accounts

A one-time recognition payment for WNBA veterans and retired players based on years of service in the league, ranging from $30,000 to $100,000

Improved life insurance benefits totaling more than $700,000 per player

Expanded mental health coverage, including a specific mental health reimbursement benefit

Expanded family planning benefits for players and their spouses/partners

Historic New Agreement in the WNBA: A Turning Point in Women’s Sports The WNBA and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) have finalized and signed a framework agreement for a new collective bargaining agreement.
