Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter for [Los Angeles Dodgers](\/mlb\/team\/_\/name\/lad\/los-angeles-dodgers) star Shohei Ohtani, is being held in a federal prison in Pennsylvania, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.<\/p>\n
Mizuhara, 40, was required to surrender to federal authorities on Monday. He is currently in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution Allenwood Low, a low-security facility, after being sentenced to 57 months in prison for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani.<\/p>\n
Originally, Mizuhara was ordered to report to prison in March, but a federal judge granted a postponement. The reasons for this delay remain under seal.<\/p>\n
Mizuhara’s lawyer did not comment on the matter, but had previously indicated that he expected Mizuhara, who is a Japanese citizen, to eventually be deported.<\/p>\n
The Dodgers fired Mizuhara in March 2024 after an investigation revealed that he had sent millions in wire transfers from Ohtani’s account to an illegal bookmaker. He pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing a false tax return in June 2024, admitting that he placed approximately 19,000 bets with the bookmaker over a two-year period and accumulated a debt of over $40 million.<\/p>\n
