Zack Wheeler won’t be ready for Opening Day with the Phillies<\/h2>\n\nPhiladelphia Phillies’ star opener Zack Wheeler will not be available to start the regular season, according to manager Rob Thomson. The pitcher continues his recovery process after decompression surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome performed on September 23rd.\n\n\n

Although Wheeler’s presence on Opening Day was seen as unlikely from the start, this is the first time the manager has practically ruled out that possibility. “He’s progressing well; I don’t think he’ll be ready for Opening Day, but it won’t be long after that,” Thomson explained.<\/p>\n\n\nThe estimated recovery time for this type of procedure is between six and eight months, which suggests that his return could be between the end of March and the end of May. Wheeler already had a pitching session last weekend and, according to the coaching staff, responded positively.\n\nThe organization expects the right-hander to be able to rejoin near the start of that projected window.
