Following the confirmation of Ha-Seong Kim’s departure, the Atlanta Braves have announced the addition of Dominican infielder Jorge Mateo, via a one-season contract.<\/p>\n
This strategic move seeks to strengthen the team’s depth in the infield.<\/p>\n
Mateo, 30 years old, joins the team after becoming a free agent following his time with the Baltimore Orioles.<\/p>\n
In the 2025 season, Mateo recorded a batting average of .177, with one home run and an OPS of .483 in 42 games.<\/p>\n
Since his debut in the Major Leagues in 2020 with the San Diego Padres, Mateo has accumulated an OPS of .629 in 1,411 plate appearances.<\/p>\n
Despite having played in various outfield positions and at second base, Mateo has primarily performed as a shortstop.<\/p>\n
In this role, Mateo will provide support to Honduran Mauricio Dub\u00f3n, who will take over the starting position while Kim recovers.<\/p>\n
Mateo’s arrival will also provide the team with additional speed options on the bases, as he has proven to be an efficient runner in recent years.<\/p>\n
Since 2022, the Dominican has been successful in 84.1% of his stolen base attempts, with 95 stolen bases in 113 opportunities, including a season of 35 stolen bases with Baltimore.<\/p>\n
Kim, who signed a one-year contract for US$20 million in December, suffered an injury in South Korea that resulted in a tendon rupture in the middle finger of his right hand.<\/p>\n
This injury required surgery and a recovery period of four to five months is estimated.<\/p>\n
The incorporation of Mateo will allow Atlanta to take advantage of Dub\u00f3n’s defensive versatility, who will be able to perform in other strategic positions during the games, while Mateo covers the shortstop.<\/p>\n
