A plane crash in Río Verde, Yamasá, forever marked the history of sports and national aviation. On this fateful day, a plane from the Compañía Dominicana de Aviación (CDA) crashed, taking with it a talented amateur baseball team from Santiago.

This team, composed of Dominican baseball stars, was heading towards new challenges when tragedy cut short their dreams. The entire country mourned the loss of these young athletes, who promised great achievements in the 1948 National Amateur Baseball Championship.

Since then, the tragedy of Río Verde has remained as an open wound in the collective memory of the Dominican people.

Each year, a commemorative ceremony is held at the Municipal Cemetery of Santiago, where the remains of the players and crew rest. This act reaffirms the commitment to not forget those who lost their lives in that tragic flight.

Among the victims were prominent figures such as Aquiles Martínez, Ventura “Loro” Escalante, Chino Álvarez, Pedro Báez (Grillo A), Víctor Saín Clare (Papito Lucas) and Bombo Ramos. Many of them were about to make the jump to professional baseball, at a time when Major Leagues were beginning to open their doors to Latin American talents.

The tragedy also claimed the lives of pilot Ramón María Hernando and co-pilot José del Carmen Ramírez Duval, the latter a recognized basketball and volleyball athlete, and a relative of the singer Rhina Ramírez.

Enrique “Mariscal” Lantigua was the only survivor of the Santiago team, as he did not board the plane.

The tragedy of Río Verde represented not only the loss of lives, but also the abrupt end of promising careers and the mourning of a country that saw in these young athletes the future of its national sport.

More than seven decades after the event, the Dominican nation keeps alive the memory of those players and crew members, reaffirming that their legacy remains eternal in the history of baseball and in the hearts of the people.

Tragedy in Rio Verde: An Open Wound in Dominican Sports History On January 11, 1948, the Dominican Republic was in mourning.
