The key question now is where this talented player will fit into the team’s scheme.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins expressed his enthusiasm when introducing Okamoto, who signed a four-year, $60 million contract. However, Atkins was cautious when discussing Okamoto’s specific position on the field, given the uncertainty with other key players.

“It could impact our organization from a defensive standpoint in several ways. We will continue to dialogue with him,” Atkins stated.

Ross Atkins

Atkins is also in talks with Bo Bichette, a key player for the Blue Jays. Bichette, who has been an integral part of the team, had an outstanding season last year, with a .311 average, 18 home runs, and 94 RBIs. Throughout his career with Toronto, he has accumulated 111 home runs and 437 RBIs.

The possibility of moving Bichette to second base could strengthen the team’s defense, allowing the Blue Jays to field Andres Gimenez at shortstop. In this scenario, Okamoto could play at third base.

The Blue Jays also have Ernie Clement, who played second base, shortstop and third base last season.

Okamoto, who hit a home run against the United States team in the final of the 2023 World Baseball Classic, expressed his desire to represent his country again in the 2026 tournament.

After being one step away from the World Series title in 1993, the Blue Jays have made significant signings this offseason. In addition to Okamoto, the team signed three pitchers, including Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce and Tyler Rogers.

“I am very happy to join the Blue Jays. I will work hard every day and give my best for the team. Thank you for your support. Nice to meet you. Go Blue Jays!” Okamoto said.

Okamoto hit .327 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 69 games last year with the Yomiuri Giants. The player suffered a left elbow injury on May 6 that kept him out of action until August 16.

In his 11 seasons in the Japanese league, Okamoto has a .277 average with 248 home runs and 717 RBIs. He has been a six-time All-Star and led the Central League in home runs in 2020, 2021, and 2023.

“It’s been exciting to watch him over the years.
