Both Schoen and Daboll were hired in 2022.

Although the results of the 2025 season were deeply disappointing, we prioritized continuity and stability in the front office, which is important for our progress.
John Mara and Steve Tisch, co-owners of the Giants

New York, with a 4-13 record, obtained the fifth pick in the 2026 NFL draft after winning their last two games.

The team praised the staff that Schoen, 46, had assembled last year. Mara even boasted that the information used to make personnel decisions was the best she had seen.

The last two draft classes look promising, which influenced the decision to keep Schoen. These selections produced players like Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Abdul Carter, Cam Skattebo, and Tyrone Tracy Jr., among others.

We believe in our core of young talent, upon which we can build for future success.
John Mara and Steve Tisch

Schoen has been in charge of the team’s coaching search for the past month, taking on most of the work while Mara recovers from cancer. Schoen, with input from his inner circle, presented a list of candidates to the ownership last week.

The search for the Giants’ next head coach is expected to intensify this week, once the regular season concludes. Schoen will continue to lead the search, and interim coach Mike Kafka is expected to be one of the candidates interviewed.

Schoen and Daboll were under pressure after last season, when the team had a 3-14 record. The results only improved marginally. Daboll didn’t survive, but Schoen did.

New York has gone through difficult times after reaching the playoffs in the first season of the duo. The team has a 7-27 record in the last two seasons and a winning percentage of .255 since the beginning of 2023, surpassed only by the Tennessee Titans.

This is a reflection of Schoen’s mandate, which has been full of errors since the Giants surprisingly made the playoffs with a 9-7-1 record in his first year. He himself has admitted to accelerating the process after the success of 2022, which led to mistakes.

During Schoen’s tenure as general manager, the Giants have a regular season record of 22-45-1 and 1-1 in the postseason.

Schoen signed quarterback Daniel Jones to a long-term contract after that season and used the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley. Jones was cut less than two years later. Barkley left as a free agent to the rival team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

In addition, safety Xavier McKinney also left in free agency and was immediately All-Pro for the Green Bay Packers.

Schoen’s first-round selections also included offensive tackle Evan Neal and cornerback Deonte Banks. Neal did not play a single snap this season, and Banks’ primary role for most of the season was as a kick returner. In addition, outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, the fifth selection in the 2022 draft, has not developed into the Pro Bowl player that was expected.

But the 2025 draft included Dart, Carter, and Skattebo. The previous year’s draft produced Nabers, Tracy, and tight end Theo Johnson.

Schoen admitted last month that there have been good and bad things in recent years. The results spoke for themselves.

Nobody’s perfect, and the chances of me having a perfect average are gone because I’ve made mistakes, okay? Everyone is going to make mistakes and we’re going to do some things right. As long as you’re learning from those mistakes and reflecting on the process and where you went wrong, and you can keep improving, that’s the most important thing.
Joe Schoen

Schoen added:

I am better today than I was four years ago when I got this job. God willing, in a year, I will be here, I will be better than I am today, and that’s all I can do.
Joe Schoen

The New York Giants have decided to keep Joe Schoen as general manager, despite closing out their third consecutive season with a losing record, the team announced on Monday.
