The New York Liberty, after a promising start to the WNBA season, have experienced significant ups and downs. The team, which reached a 9-0 record, is now facing major challenges, especially with the absence of key players. The situation became complicated from June 10th, when Leonie Fiebich was absent to participate in the EuroBasket tournament with Germany. In addition, Jonquel Jones’ ankle injury, the MVP of the 2024 Finals, has notably affected the team, costing them nine games so far. With a 12-6 record, the Liberty struggle to maintain consistency. The absence of Jones and the gradual return of Fiebich have impacted performance. Coach Sandy Brondello pointed out the difficulty of defending without Jones’s interior presence, crucial for countering opponents’ strategies.

We have suffered many changes this year. As long as we have good spacing and confidence, we are fine. I think our confidence is gone.

Despite the challenges, the team maintains a positive outlook. Sabrina Ionescu emphasized the importance of unity and understanding of the circumstances. The team is confident that Jones can return after the All-Star break.

I think the team’s morale is excellent. I wouldn’t say that a win or a loss has really divided the locker room or put any kind of obstacle between us. We understand the pieces we’ve been missing. We understand the games we’ve lost and how we’ve lost them.

The Liberty are preparing to receive the Las Vegas Aces in a crucial match. Isabelle Harrison is doubtful due to a knee injury, which adds more pressure to the team.
