Courtney Vandersloot misses the rest of the 2025 season due to injury
WNBA star Courtney Vandersloot will be unable to play the rest of the 2025 season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee, the Chicago Sky team announced. The injury occurred on Saturday, while Vandersloot was attempting a drive to the basket in the game against the Indiana Fever, and had to be taken off the court. After an MRI, the severity of the injury was confirmed, and she will undergo surgery for its repair. Vandersloot was in her first season back with the Sky, the team that drafted her in 2011 and with which she won a WNBA title in 2021. She had returned to Chicago after two years with the New York Liberty, where she was part of the championship team in 2024. The point guard, a five-time All-Star and five-time All-WNBA team selection, has been a key player throughout her career. The only time she missed more than seven games in a season was in 2014, due to a medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain, but even so, she participated in 17 games. Vandersloot is the Sky’s all-time leading scorer, a record she took from her wife, Allie Quigley, last month, and is the league’s assists leader with 2,886. This season, she was averaging 10.6 points and 5.3 assists for Chicago (2-5), but, above all, she had the task of providing leadership to a team that is being built around young players like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso.Vandersloot’s absence likely means that Hailey Van Lith, chosen in the first round of the 2025 draft, will have to take on more responsibility. The Sky also has point guard Moriah Jefferson on the roster, but she has yet to debut in the regular season due to an injury.“She is our engine, our captain and leader on the court, so, obviously, it’s a hard blow. But let’s hope it’s not as serious as we think. We hope she can recover, but for now, we all have to support her. We all have to encourage her; we all have to encourage each other”.
Tyler Marsh, coach of Chicago
“It’s heartbreaking to see anyone get injured, but especially a teammate and someone who means so much to our team and this organization.”
