Breanna Stewart Suffers Knee Injury, Concern in the Liberty

New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart is suffering from a bone bruise in her right knee, according to team coach Sandy Brondello, this Wednesday before the game against the Minnesota Lynx. Brondello did not set a definite timeline for Stewart’s return to the court.

We want to be careful with this. If we can get her back by the end of August, I think that would be great. It’s a long-term vision… so when she’s ready. But keep her fresh for the playoffs. I know she’ll be back before then. When she’ll return before the end of the regular season, I don’t know.

Sandy Brondello, Liberty Coach
Stewart suffered the injury at the beginning of the Liberty’s 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. In addition, she missed Monday’s game against Dallas, which ended with a score of 92-82. Stewart, a two-time WNBA MVP, will turn 31 on August 27. Throughout her nine seasons, she has averaged 20.6 points and 8.5 rebounds. Selected as number 1 in 2016 after winning four national championships with UConn, Stewart won two WNBA titles with the Seattle Storm before joining the Liberty in 2023. In 2019, she missed the entire season due to an Achilles tendon injury. In the current season, Stewart averages 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. Before Saturday’s injury, she had participated in all of the Liberty’s games in 2025. Stewart’s absence comes shortly after Jonquel Jones’ return to the Liberty roster last week. Jones has been absent for 12 games this season due to injuries. Despite the various injuries that have affected the team, New York remains in second place in the WNBA with a record of 17-8, behind Minnesota (22-5). Wednesday’s game was the first of four regular season games between the Lynx and the Liberty, who faced each other in the WNBA Finals last year.
