New York Liberty Defeats Washington Mystics Despite Absences

In an exciting WNBA matchup, the New York Liberty secured a resounding victory over the Washington Mystics with a score of 89-63, despite the adversities presented by key injuries in their roster. The New York team demonstrated its resilience on the court, overcoming the absence of important figures like Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones. Breanna Stewart, Emma Meesseman, and Marine Johannes took on leading roles, leading the Liberty to a crucial victory that solidifies their position in the standings. Ionescu suffered a toe injury during a pre-game practice, while Jones was absent due to health issues. These absences were compounded by those of Natasha Cloud and Nyara Sabally, leaving the team with a limited number of available players.

“Welcome to the 2025 New York Liberty,” coach Sandy Brondello quipped before the game. “It’s been crazy.”

Breanna Stewart’s return, after a 13-game absence due to a knee injury, was a significant boost for the team. Although she played under minute restrictions, she contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds. Meesseman led the team with 15 points, while Johannes scored 14. With this victory, the Liberty remain firm in the fight for the playoffs, placing only half a game behind fourth place and home-court advantage in the first round. Washington coach Sydney Johnson acknowledged the challenge of facing the Liberty, even with their star players absent.

“They have a lot of people. We have big challenges ahead,” Johnson commented. “Sabrina and JJ won’t be there, but others will. I can guarantee it.”

The New York team has shown its ability to win, especially when they have Ionescu, Jones, and Stewart on the court. Their record is 10-0 when these three players complete the games, and 13-15 when they are not available.
