Kelsey Mitchell Reveals Medical Condition That Caused Temporary Paralysis

Indiana Fever’s standout guard, Kelsey Mitchell, shared details about a concerning incident during Tuesday night’s WNBA semi-final game. According to Mitchell, a medical condition affected the function of her muscles, preventing her from moving her legs. The incident occurred at the end of the third quarter of the game against the Las Vegas Aces, which resulted in a 107-98 overtime loss. This victory secured the Aces their third appearance in the WNBA Finals in four years, eliminating the Fever after a remarkable playoff run.

During the game, All-Star center Aliyah Boston committed her fifth foul while making a block, just as Mitchell was heading towards the basket. Mitchell fell to the ground, and players and coaches gathered around her, using towels to protect her privacy. Although a stretcher was prepared, it was not needed. Mitchell managed to stand up and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“I suffered from something called rhabdomyolysis last night. My muscles stopped producing and reached their maximum capacity,” Mitchell wrote. “I went into a feeling of numbness/paralysis with no movement in my lower extremities for about 5 to 7 seconds.”

Mitchell added that she experienced panic at not being able to move her legs, describing the experience as “out of her body.” She thanked God for his protection and expressed her gratitude to the coaches and doctors who attended to her in the arena and in the hospital. The 29-year-old player, former Ohio State star and key figure in Indiana’s impressive performance, led the team in scoring during the regular season, averaging 20.2 points. In the playoffs, she maintained her leadership with an average of 22.3 points in 32.6 minutes over eight games. The Fever played without four key players, including All-Star guard Caitlin Clark, due to season-ending injuries. Despite the adversities, Indiana, driven by Mitchell, managed to win their first playoff series in a decade, overcoming a 1-0 deficit in the first round against Atlanta. The Fever took the Aces, the second seed, to a decisive fifth game and overtime, despite Boston’s foul trouble and Mitchell’s issues.

“…I literally played until my wheels fell off,” Mitchell wrote. “THANK YOU for the prayers, the love, the respect, and the support throughout this.”
