Hammon Slams Aces After Humiliating Defeat

Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon expressed her deep disappointment after her team’s 81-54 loss to the Indiana Fever. Hammon called the performance “one of the worst games I’ve seen.” The Fever, who were coming off a win on Tuesday in the Commissioner’s Cup final, broke a streak of 16 consecutive losses against the Aces, dating back to 2019. Despite the absence of the injured Caitlin Clark, Indiana’s offense, led by Kelsey Mitchell, was relentless. In contrast, Las Vegas had a very poor performance, with 26.2% field goal shooting. A’ja Wilson was the only Aces player to score in double figures with 29 points; the next scorer was Jackie Young with six points. That is a complete lack of professionalism to come here with that effort. Hammon did not hide her frustration, criticizing the team’s lack of effort and focus. The Aces, now with an 8-9 record, are in fifth place in the Western Conference. The coach also pointed out defensive problems, especially the ease with which the team allowed baskets near the hoop. “I don’t have answers for you. The effort and concentration just weren’t there,” she stated. Hammon reflected on the team’s inconsistency, mentioning that in the past they have had very varied performances. “One team is inconsistent, and another is not. One team is three steps behind; another is not. They got all the loose balls. They destroyed us in every way. It’s one of the worst games I’ve seen,” Hammon added. The Aces, who won WNBA titles in 2022 and 2023, have had an irregular season. Faced with this situation, Hammon suggested the possibility of making changes to the starting lineup. Hammon emphasized the need to improve the team’s effort in every game. “If I knew what buttons to press to ensure that our effort was adequate every night, I would be pressing them,” she concluded.
