Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever Fined for Criticizing Referees

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been fined $500 for a TikTok post criticizing the league’s referees, according to the player on her X account. The original TikTok video showed Cunningham lip-syncing to the lyrics of a song that said: “Stupid. Or are they slow? Or maybe useless?” with the phrase “@ some referees” in the video. The TikTok post, made on July 18, has accumulated 1.3 million views.

I was fined $500 for this TikTok,” Cunningham wrote on her X account on Wednesday, adding laughing emojis. “I don’t know why this makes me laugh… ok, I get it! As if there aren’t more important things to worry about in our league right now.

The refereeing performance has been a topic of debate in the league this season, with numerous players and coaches criticizing the referees for their inconsistent decisions. Some of the most prominent cases have involved decisions that affected Fever star Caitlin Clark, Cunningham’s teammate.

Everyone is getting better, except the referees,” Fever coach Stephanie White said last month. “So we have to figure out a way to fix it. I mean, you’ve heard all the coaches talk about it, so I don’t know what the answer is.

Cunningham has been in the spotlight recently for appearing to protect Clark. She was ejected after a physical altercation with Connecticut’s Jacy Sheldon last month, following a fight between Sheldon and Clark during the game. Sheldon was also ejected.
