WNBA Strengthens Security Following Inappropriate On-Court Incidents

The WNBA has announced strong measures following two incidents in which objects were thrown onto the court during recent games. The league has confirmed the arrest of the person involved in throwing an object at the Atlanta Dream game and has established more severe penalties for this type of behavior. The first incident occurred during a Dream versus Golden State game, while the second took place in Chicago, during the match between Golden State and the Sky. In both cases, objects were thrown onto the court, interrupting the game and raising safety concerns. The league has made it clear that the safety of everyone present in the stadiums is a priority. Anyone who throws objects onto the field will be immediately expelled from the venue and will face a minimum ban of one year, in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.

“The safety and well-being of everyone in our stadiums is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or seating area can pose a risk to the safety of players, game officials, and fans,” the league stated in a statement.

Sky player Elizabeth Williams expressed her discontent after the incident, calling it disrespectful and immature. The situation also generated reactions on social media, where New York Liberty player Isabelle Harrison called for improved stadium security. The WNBA arenas have security procedures, including bag restriction policies or the use of transparent bags of limited size. All bags are subject to inspection upon entering the stadium.
