Angel Reese apologizes to her teammates after controversial statements

WNBA star Angel Reese publicly apologized to her Chicago Sky teammates after expressing certain concerns about the team’s future in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. In the conversation with the media, Reese suggested that he might consider “moving in a different direction” if the team didn’t improve its level of play. After the Sky’s 88-64 victory over the Connecticut Sun, Reese was asked about her frustration with the organization. The team, which currently has a 10-30 record and has been eliminated from the playoffs for the second consecutive year, has performed 3-15 since the All-Star break in July.

I’m probably frustrated with myself at the moment. I think the language was taken out of context. I really didn’t mean to disparage my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me all year. They’ve given their all, just like me. They’ve supported me through thick and thin, and in the locker room when no one could see anything.

Reese also added that she needed to “be better” with her language, recognizing that her words can be misinterpreted. In the interview with the Tribune, Reese expressed his concern about the team’s performance this season, as well as the direction of coach Tyler Marsh and the Sky’s future actions to avoid similar results in 2026.

I’m not settling for the same s*** we did this year. We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s not negotiable for me. I’m willing and I want to play with the best. And I’m going to do what I can to bring the best here, that’s what I’m going to do this offseason.

When asked about Reese’s comments, coach Tyler Marsh stated that he would speak with her privately. Marsh also addressed Reese’s suggestion about the need to train the players “more harshly”, indicating that each person has the right to express their feelings and that the most important thing for him is to be authentic. Reese, who averages 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds (WNBA leader) this season, had 18 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday’s victory. In addition, she received her eighth technical foul of the season, which could result in an automatic suspension for the next game. Marsh indicated that the Sky are contesting the technical foul and will ask the league to review it. Reese, 23, is finishing her second year of a three-year rookie contract with an option for a fourth year. She was runner-up in the Rookie of the Year race last season. In the interview, Reese also questioned the current talent on the Sky’s roster and made it clear that she expected the team’s management to be active in free agency. Reese also expressed concern about the team’s point guard position. Although Courtney Vandersloot returned to Chicago this season, she suffered a season-ending injury. Reese indicated that she does not see Vandersloot or anyone on the current roster as the long-term point guard for the team.

As for whether Chicago can become a championship team again, Reese noted that it remains to be seen and that the Sky must convince players that the organization is heading in the right direction.

Marsh said his focus is on the Sky playing their best in the remaining four games.
