Zverev advances in the Canadian Open after defeating Walton

TORONTO – Alexander Zverev, top seed, defeated Adam Walton with scores of 7-6 (6), 6-4 at the Canadian Open, in his first match after his participation in Wimbledon. Zverev seeks to regain his best form after a promising start to the season, where he reached the final of the Australian Open. However, he was surprised in the first round of Wimbledon by Arthur Rinderknech, after which he admitted to dealing with mental problems.

“I’m trying to find ways to get out of this rut. I keep finding myself back in it somehow,” Zverev declared.

The German tennis player, currently ranked third in the ranking, is the number one seed in this tournament, which he won in 2017. This is due to the absences of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Zverev achieved a crucial point in the tie-break after an exchange of 52 strokes.

“It was a very important moment and a crucial point for me. I was lucky to get through the first set and then close out the match in two sets,” commented Zverev.

Holger Rune, fifth seed, also advanced by defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard with a result of 7-6 (7), 6-3 on a sunny and hot afternoon. All pre-seeded players enjoyed a bye in the first round of the Masters 1000 tournament, which also saw the withdrawals of Jack Draper, ranked number 5, and Novak Djokovic, number 6. Other winners were Casper Ruud (8), Daniil Medvedev (10), Karen Khachanov (11), Francisco Cerundolo (14) and Alexei Popyrin (18), the defending champion. Reilly Opelka surprised by defeating Tomas Machac (16) in three sets.
