Venus Williams Falls to Magdalena Frech at the D.C. Open

American tennis player Venus Williams saw her winning streak cut short at the D.C. Open, falling to Polish player Magdalena Frech with a score of 6-2, 6-2. Williams, 45, had achieved her first singles tournament victory since 2023 by defeating Peyton Stearns in the first round. This win made her the oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA circuit since 2004, when Martina Navratilova was 47. The hard court tournament marked Williams’ return to competition after surgery for uterine fibroids. The last time Williams achieved at least two consecutive victories was in August 2019, at the Cincinnati Open. The match against Frech started with Williams taking a 2-1 lead, but Frech responded by winning seven games in a row to take the first set and lead 2-0 in the second. Frech, 27 years old, reached the fourth round of the 2024 Australian Open, where she was defeated by Coco Gauff. Despite the public’s support, which celebrated each of Williams’ shots, the American made mistakes that cost her the match. Williams reacted with a smile and a wave to the ovation from the public after the match, which lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes.
