Wheelchair Tennis Returns to the US Open

Wheelchair tennis returns to the US Open after a break last year due to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Friday the participant lists for the upcoming US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships, to be held September 2-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. This tournament will also celebrate the twentieth anniversary of wheelchair tennis at the US Open. The championships have experienced significant growth over the years. In 2007, the quad division was added, and in 2022, the US Open became the first of the four Grand Slams to include a junior wheelchair tennis division, with singles and doubles events for both boys and girls. The United States will have six players in the tournament, while the Netherlands leads with nine. Alfie Hewett, from Great Britain, will seek his third consecutive title in the US Open men’s. Tokito Oda, Wimbledon champion and world number one, will participate in the tournament, seeking the Golden Slam of his career, which includes the four Grand Slams and the Paralympic Games. Diede de Groot, from the Netherlands, could become the female champion with the most victories if she achieves her seventh consecutive singles title. She is currently tied with Esther Alf Vergeer, who retired in 2013.
