Tennis in the United States Reaches Record Figures in 2025
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Wednesday that a total of 27.3 million people played tennis in the country during the year 2025. This figure represents a new historical high, consolidating six consecutive years of growth for this sport.
Recreational tennis experienced a notable boom during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. Since 2019, participation in the United States has increased by 54%, according to the results of an independent study.
More than half of the players, a total of 14.5 million, participated in ten or more tennis sessions in 2025. In addition, the incorporation of 4.9 million new players was recorded, which represents an increase of 9%.
The USTA has set an ambitious goal of reaching 35 million players by the year 2035. In the last year, significant progress was made towards this goal, with an increase in participation from various demographic groups:
- Women: 1.1 million more, an increase of 10%.
- Black people: 450,000 more, an increase of 14%.
- Hispanics: 550,000 more, an increase of 12%.
- Asians and Pacific Islanders: 260,000 more, an increase of 10%.
The data presented comes from an analysis conducted by the National Golf Foundation (NGF), based on studies by the Physical Activity Council (PAC) and the PLAY Study (formerly known as the Participation and Engagement Study).
