In a day filled with excitement and hard-fought matches, Spain and Germany secured their place in the semifinals of the Davis Cup, demonstrating a high level of tennis and determination on the court.
Spain Beats Czech Republic
The Spanish team, led by Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez Portero, achieved a crucial victory in the decisive doubles match, defeating Tomas Machac and Jakub Mensik. This victory secured Spain’s triumph with a score of 2-1 over the Czech Republic, opening the doors to the semifinals.
Granollers and Martínez shone in the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury. The Spanish duo proved their worth by winning the doubles with a score of 7-6 (8), 7-6 (8) at the SuperTennis Arena.
The 20-year-old Mensik stood out with 20 aces, securing the advantage for the Czech team by defeating Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 7-5, 6-4. However, Jaume Munar responded for Spain, winning his first singles match in the Davis Cup against Jiri Lehecka, with a result of 6-3, 6-4.
“I had a lot of confidence in my tennis. It doesn’t matter who is in front. I had a lot of confidence in myself and that’s the most important thing,” declared Munar.
Spain will face Germany in the semi-finals, a match that promises to be a clash of titans.
Germany Secures Spot in Semifinals
Germany, for its part, achieved a narrow victory over Argentina with a score of 2-1. Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz were the heroes of the day, winning the decisive doubles in a third-set tiebreaker against Andrés Molteni and Horacio Zeballos.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry put Argentina in the lead by defeating Jan-Lennard Struff, but Alexander Zverev tied the score for Germany by defeating Francisco Cerundolo. In the doubles, Krawietz and Puetz came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (10), in a match where both teams wasted match points.
The Davis Cup in Bologna continues to offer high-quality tennis, with Italy facing Belgium in the other semifinal. The Italians, without Jannik Sinner, will seek their third consecutive title and the fourth overall.
