Jannik Sinner Successfully Begins Defense of His Title at the Shanghai Masters

Shanghai – Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, number two in the world, started his defense of the title at the Shanghai Masters on the right foot. Sinner defeated Daniel Altmaier with a score of 6-3, 6-3, thus achieving revenge after his defeat against the German two years ago at the French Open. This victory extends Sinner’s winning streak to six consecutive matches, after obtaining the title at the China Open in Beijing on Wednesday.

I knew today’s match was going to be very difficult. I didn’t have much time to adapt here. But that makes it even more special.

Sinner had not faced Altmaier since the German defeated him in five sets in the second round of Roland Garros in 2023, where Sinner squandered two match points. In the next round, Sinner will face Tallon Griekspoor, whom he leads 6-0 in their head-to-head matches.

Everything is different. There’s a lot more humidity, and it can feel much more physical here. I tried to rest, but it’s difficult after winning a title. You have to have a great balance of practice. Obviously, now the priority is to feel as good as possible physically for the next match.

Felix Auger-Aliassime, 12th seed, overcame Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 6-3, and Kamil Majchrzak defeated Brandon Nakashima, the 29th-ranked American, with a score of 6-4, 6-0.
