Ben Shelton Withdraws from US Open Due to Shoulder Injury
New York – American tennis player Ben Shelton, seeded number 6, was forced to retire from his third-round match at the US Open due to a left shoulder injury.
Shelton, who has been a semifinalist in two Grand Slam tournaments, retired after losing the fourth set against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, which forced a fifth set. The injury could have been caused by falling on his left arm after chasing a ball in the corner that gave him the victory in the third set.
During the fourth set, Shelton began to make gestures of pain and told his coach: “I did something to my shoulder. I don’t know what it is.”
He received medical treatment in the middle of the set and tried to shorten the points by attacking the net consistently. However, after Mannarino won the set, Shelton was again attended to by the trainer and decided to abandon the match.
Mannarino, 37, secured his first victory in 23 matches against top 10 players in Grand Slam tournaments.
