Pegula Advances Forcefully in the US Open

American tennis player Jessica Pegula, runner-up at the US Open last year, demonstrated her dominance on the court by defeating Anna Blinkova in just 64 minutes, with a score of 6-1 and 6-3. This victory secures her place in the third round of the tournament for the sixth consecutive year. Since the beginning of 2021, Pegula, currently ranked fourth, has accumulated 32 victories in Grand Slam tournaments on hard courts. This figure places her in third place among women, only behind Aryna Sabalenka, number one in the world and defending champion, and Iga Swiatek, number two. Pegula, 31, has lost only eight games in her two matches, matching her fewest games lost to reach the third round of a major tournament in her career. This participation in the US Open represents her sixteenth time in the third round of a Grand Slam. In the next round, Pegula will face Victoria Azarenka, a two-time Australian Open champion and former world number one, who is unseeded in this tournament. Azarenka, 36, and a three-time US Open finalist, achieved her 100th victory in Grand Slam matches on hard court by defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Vika is always very tough. I know she hasn’t been playing much and has had injuries and all that, but… when she’s in form, she’s probably one of the best baseline players we’ve had, especially in women’s tennis, that I can remember.

This will be the seventh encounter between Pegula and Azarenka, who have split their previous six matches.

I feel like I know her pretty well, and I think we know each other’s games very well. We also train quite a few times, more at home because we live close to each other. Definitely no secrets.

In the night session, Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, advanced to the third round after defeating Polina Kudermetova with a score of 7-6 (4) and 6-2. In addition to Pegula and Sabalenka, Emma Navarro, the tenth seed, also secured her place in the next round by defeating Caty McNally in an all-American match with a score of 6-2 and 6-1. Navarro will face Barbora Krejcikova in the next phase, whom she already eliminated at Wimbledon. Taylor Townsend also managed to advance to the next round after a close victory over Jelena Ostapenko, champion of the 2017 Roland Garros, with a score of 7-5 and 6-1. The match ended with a heated discussion.

In other women’s results, Emma Raducanu won her second-round match 6-2, 6-1 against Janice Tjen, who in the previous round became the first Indonesian player to win a Grand Slam singles match in 22 years. Raducanu has lost only six games in this tournament, by far her fewest in the first two rounds of a major tournament in her career.
