Jessica Pegula Advances to US Open Quarterfinals

The American tennis player Jessica Pegula, seeded number 4 and runner-up of the 2024 US Open, secured her place in the quarterfinals of the tournament for the second consecutive year. Her victory over her compatriot Ann Li with a score of 6-1 and 6-2 this Sunday at Flushing Meadows, gives her a pass to the next round.

Pegula, who opened the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium, has not yet conceded a set so far in the tournament. The three games she lost against Li represent the fewest in a US Open match in her entire career.

In the four rounds played, Pegula has lost only 17 games, the lowest figure on her way to any of her eight quarter-final appearances in a Grand Slam tournament.

Ann Li, 25, was one of five American tennis players to reach the round of 16, and this was her first appearance in the second week of a tournament of this magnitude. Li faced a tough challenge against Pegula, managing to win only 20% of the points with her second serve and suffering six breaks in eight service games.

Pegula has excelled in tournaments held on US soil. Her 85 victories in WTA matches in the United States since the beginning of 2020 are the most for any player on the women’s circuit.

In the quarterfinals, Pegula will face the winner of the match between two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova and American Taylor Townsend, who previously defeated the number 5 seed, Mirra Andreeva.
