Emma Navarro Advances at Wimbledon After Defeating Krejcikova

American tennis player Emma Navarro, currently ranked number 10, achieved a remarkable victory at Wimbledon. Navarro came back from a set down to defeat defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, with scores of 2-6, 6-3, and 6-4. The match, corresponding to the third round, was defined in a third set where Krejcikova showed signs of physical difficulty. At one point, her blood pressure was taken during a change of sides, after Navarro broke serve to go 3-2 up. During the medical timeout, Krejcikova ate a banana and hydrated, while Navarro took the opportunity to talk to her coach. Despite trying to recover, Krejcikova continued to show signs of discomfort, leaning on her knees between points. Although he managed to break Navarro’s serve to tie the score at 3-3, Navarro broke again and held his serve to lead 5-3, finally securing the victory two games later.

It was a very tough match, probably neither of us played our best tennis. I know she had to deal with some injuries, and I also had my problems

The match was marked by Krejcikova’s performance, who accumulated 34 winners, surpassing Navarro by 21, but also committed 53 unforced errors. Navarro, for her part, surprised with only 11 unforced errors.

This is the fifth time Navarro has reached the round of 16 in the last six Grand Slam tournaments, tying Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff as the players with the most appearances at this stage in that period. Her next challenge will be against Russian Mirra Andreeva, the seventh seed.

With the elimination of Krejcikova, Iga Swiatek, number 8 in the world, is the only former Grand Slam champion remaining in the bottom half of the draw. The winner of the women’s title on July 12th will become the ninth different champion in the last nine editions of the grass court tournament, marking the longest streak of its kind in Wimbledon history. Serena Williams was the last player to repeat the title, in 2016. The champions since then have been Garbiñe Muguruza in 2017, Angelique Kerber in 2018, Simona Halep in 2019, Ash Barty in 2021, Elena Rybakina in 2022 and Marketa Vondrousova in 2023. Rybakina also lost on Saturday, while Vondrousova was eliminated in the second round. Last year’s triumph was the second in a Grand Slam tournament for Krejcikova, who also won the 2021 French Open and was the number 17 seed at Wimbledon this year.
