Rafael Nadal Receives Title of Marquis from King Felipe VI

King Felipe VI of Spain has honored tennis legend Rafael Nadal with the noble title of marquis, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the country through his brilliant sporting career, according to an official statement from the Royal House. Nadal, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles, was honored along with five other personalities in the celebrations of the monarch’s tenth anniversary on the throne. Among the other honorees are pop-rock singer Luz Casal and Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales.

“They are a source of pride for Spain and a permanent benchmark of values that should inspire our society,” the palace declared.

The former world number one, Nadal, 39, will hold the title of Marquis of Llevant de Mallorca, the island where he was born and where he currently resides. This noble title is hereditary and can be passed on to his descendants. Nadal, who conquered Roland Garros on 14 occasions, was commemorated last month on the same court with a permanent footprint on the center court.
