Petra Kvitova Bids Farewell to Wimbledon in Tears
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova says goodbye to her favorite Grand Slam tournament. The 35-year-old Czech tennis player, who triumphed at the All England Club in 2011 and 2014, plans to retire from the circuit after the US Open, which ends in September. Her farewell at Wimbledon materialized with a defeat against the American Emma Navarro, tenth seed, with a score of 6-3 and 6-1 on court number 1.Visibly excited, Kvitova expressed her feelings in an on-court interview, usually given to the winner of the match. Kvitova, who received a wildcard invitation, was absent from last year’s tournament due to her maternity leave. Navarro, 24 years old, highlighted that Kvitova has been “an incredible player and, obviously, she won this tournament twice, and then had a child and came back, which is definitely an inspiring story”. In 2011, Kvitova defeated Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-4 in the final. Three years later, she obtained her second trophy, defeating Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 in the title match. The tennis player assured that the US Open will be her last participation. Kvitova stated that the motivation has changed and that she is ready for the next stage of her life. This place treasures the best memories I could wish for. I never dreamed of winning Wimbledon and I won it twice. This is something very special.
