Ons Jabeur Withdraws in First Round of Wimbledon

Ons Jabeur’s participation in Wimbledon 2024 has come to an abrupt end. The Tunisian tennis player, a two-time finalist in the tournament, was forced to retire in her first-round match against Viktoriya Tomova. The match, which lasted one hour and twenty-five minutes, saw Tomova dominate the first set and take a 2-0 lead in the second before Jabeur made the decision to withdraw from the competition. Jabeur, 30 years old and who reached the final in 2022 and 2023, seemed visibly affected by the high temperatures recorded on court 14. During the first set, the player requested a long medical timeout. Currently outside the top 50 in the world ranking, Jabeur suffers from asthma, a condition that caused her respiratory problems at this year’s Australian Open. It was expected that temperatures at Wimbledon would reach 33 degrees Celsius on the opening day of the championship, so the All England Club implemented its protocol for hot weather.
