Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champions Without Sinner

Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the presence of Jannik Sinner. Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the Italian team, winning their singles matches and securing a 2-0 victory over Spain in Sunday’s final. This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title and the third consecutive one. The last nation to achieve three consecutive victories was the United States, which dominated the tournament between 1968 and 1972. Sinner, ranked number 2 in the world and a key player in Italy’s recent successes, chose not to participate this week, preferring to focus on preparing for the upcoming season. Lorenzo Musetti, number 8 in the world, was also absent. Italy demonstrated its strength by winning all its matches this week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, overcoming Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. Spain, for its part, was also deprived of its star, Carlos Alcaraz, number one in the world. In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Cobolli then prevailed over Jaume Munar, coming back to win 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5 and securing the decisive point for Italy, as he had already done on the three previous occasions this week. Cobolli’s celebration, with the Italian team, was a sign of the joy of the triumph. Italy conquered the Davis Cup for the first time in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home. Spain, six-time champion, reached the final for the first time since 2019.
