Italy Crowned Davis Cup Champion Without Sinner
Italy continues to demonstrate its dominance in the Davis Cup, securing its fourth title without the need for its star, Jannik Sinner, on this occasion.
Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli led the way for the Italians, winning their singles matches and securing an insurmountable 2-0 lead over Spain in Sunday’s final.
This triumph marks Italy’s fourth Davis Cup title and the third consecutive one. The last nation to achieve three titles in a row was the United States, which won five times between 1968 and 1972.
Sinner, ranked number two in the world and who led Italy to victory in the last two years, chose not to participate this week, preferring to prepare for the next season. Lorenzo Musetti, number 8 in the world, was also absent.
Italy demonstrated its strength by winning its three matches this week 2-0 at the SuperTennis Arena in Bologna, after eliminating Austria in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals.
Spain also presented itself without its star, the world’s number one, Carlos Alcaraz.
In Sunday’s final, Berrettini defeated Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Then, Cobolli fought to overcome Jaume Munar with partials of 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5, securing the decisive point, as he has done on the three occasions this week. Cobolli celebrated by dropping his racket and being lifted by his Italian teammates.
Italy first conquered the Davis Cup in 1976, followed by victories in Malaga in 2023 and 2024. This is the first time they have won at home.
Spain, with six titles, played the final for the first time since 2019.
