The French Open champion, Coco Gauff, defeated Leylah Fernandez in an exciting match that went to three sets, with a final score of 6-4, 4-6, and 7-5, securing her place in the third round of the China Open.

The current champion, and crowd favorite in Beijing, demonstrated her resilience by recovering from a stumble in the second set. Gauff had to fight to close out the match in the third, finally managing to break Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game to seal the victory.

In the next stage, Gauff will face Belinda Bencic, who previously defeated Australian Priscilla Hon with a score of 4-6, 6-4, and 6-3 in this WTA 1000 tournament.

In other notable results of the day, Eva Lys overcame Elena Rybakina with a score of 6-3, 1-6, and 6-4. Furthermore, McCartney Kessler was leading Barbora Krejcikova with a score of 1-6, 7-5, and 3-0, when the Czech player retired from the match.

The tournament is taking place simultaneously with an ATP 500 men’s tournament.

A day after Lorenzo Musetti became the latest tennis star to apologize to Chinese fans, he secured a straight-sets victory over veteran Adrian Mannarino, with a score of 6-3, 6-3, in a second-round match.

Learner Tien defeated Flavio Cobolli with a score of 6-3, 6-2, thus securing a match with Musetti, ninth-ranked, in the quarterfinals.

Alexander Zverev, ranked third, defeated Corentin Moutet with a score of 7-5, 3-6, and 6-3. His next challenge will be against Daniil Medvedev.
