Coco Gauff Crowned Champion of the Wuhan Open in All-American Final

In a completely American final, Coco Gauff defeated Jessica Pegula with scores of 6-4, 7-5, winning the Wuhan Open title this Sunday. Gauff, demonstrating a solid game, added her second championship of the year and the eleventh of her professional career.

Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before in a title run. I’m very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match, marked by intensity, saw Gauff, ranked third, defend the second set when Pegula, in sixth place, led 5-3. Gauff managed to hold her serve and subsequently broke Pegula’s, tying the score at 5-5. An error on Pegula’s forehand volley gave Gauff her first match point, and with a powerful forehand, Gauff secured the victory after a brief exchange. Pegula, who had previously defeated Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, in the semifinals, could not maintain the momentum and fell short of her tenth title. Gauff becomes the second American to win the Wuhan tournament, following in the footsteps of Venus Williams in 2015. This was the seventh match between both tennis players, being the first time they faced each other in a final. The history between them favors Pegula with a 4-3, although Gauff has managed to overcome Pegula on this occasion.

We’ve spent a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her a lot. She’s very mature for her age.
