Coco Gauff Conquers the Wuhan Open in All-American Final

American tennis player Coco Gauff won the Wuhan Open, after defeating her compatriot Jessica Pegula in a thrilling final that ended with scores of 6-4 and 7-5. Gauff, demonstrating a solid game, secured her second title of the year, adding this triumph to the one obtained at Roland Garros. With this victory, the young tennis player has accumulated a total of 11 titles in her professional career.

Winning every match of the tournament in straight sets, I don’t know if I had achieved that before in a title run. I feel very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match became dramatic in the second set, when Gauff, ranked third, managed to save the set being 5-3 down. Subsequently, she broke Pegula’s serve, who is in sixth place, tying the score 5-5. Pegula, after a forehand volley that went wide, conceded the first match point to Gauff. Finally, Gauff secured the victory with a powerful forehand, after a brief exchange of shots. Pegula, 31 years old, had defeated the world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, in the semifinals. However, on this occasion, she couldn’t keep up the pace and lost the opportunity to obtain her tenth individual title. This triumph makes Gauff the second American to win the Wuhan title, after Venus Williams, who achieved it in 2015. This was the seventh match between Gauff and Pegula, being the first time a final was played between them. Pegula leads the head-to-head with a score of 4-3, although both tennis players have achieved success together in doubles, winning several WTA titles.

We’ve shared a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her very much. She’s very mature for her age.

Gauff improves her finals record to 11-3, while Pegula falls to 9-11.
