Winning every match (in the tournament) in straight sets, I don’t know if I’ve done that before in a title run. I feel very proud of what I achieved this week, regardless of today’s result.

The match was full of key moments, including when Gauff saved the second set at a crucial moment. Pegula, for her part, had achieved an impressive victory over Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals, but could not maintain the momentum in the final. The match represented the seventh encounter between both players, with Pegula leading the series 4-3. Gauff improved her record in finals to 11-3, while Pegula was left with a record of 9-11. Gauff’s victory makes her the second American to win the Wuhan title, following in the footsteps of Venus Williams in 2015.

We’ve spent a lot of time together and, although I’m a bit older, I always admire and respect her a lot. She’s very mature for her age.
