Coco Gauff Advances at Roland Garros Despite Difficulties

American tennis player Coco Gauff, ranked number two in the world, managed to advance to the next round of the French Open, defeating Czech player Tereza Valentova in a match full of ups and downs.

Gauff, who is seeking her first Roland Garros title, defeated Valentova, who came from the qualifying rounds and is ranked 172nd, with a score of 6-2, 6-4 in a match that lasted 75 minutes on the Suzanne-Lenglen court.

Despite the interruptions from sirens and roars coming from other courts, the 2023 US Open champion, Gauff, scored only 11 winners, five fewer than her opponent. In addition, she committed 23 unforced errors, including six double faults.

Against Valentova, an 18-year-old who won the junior title at Roland Garros last year and was competing for the first time in the main draw of a major tournament, Gauff suffered five breaks. However, the 21-year-old tennis player managed to react immediately, recovering the service in Valentova’s next game on each occasion.

There’s a sense of urgency after being broken, of course. You don’t want to get too far behind. You don’t want to be two breaks down. You can live with one break. But you definitely have to serve better and do a better job of holding serve as the tournament goes on.

In her next match on Saturday, Gauff, the 2022 runner-up, will seek to reach the fourth round in Paris for the fifth consecutive time, facing another Czech player, Marie Bouzkova. Other victories in the women’s division included Jessica Pegula, Mirra Andreeva, and Marketa Vondrousova, who was a finalist at Roland-Garros in 2019.

Vondrousova, who is not seeded this year, eliminated Magdalena Frech with a score of 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 and then watched the match between Gauff and Valentova from the stands.
