Fritz advances to the quarterfinals at Wimbledon after Thompson’s retirement due to injury

American tennis player Taylor Fritz advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the second consecutive year this Sunday. The victory was achieved after Jordan Thompson withdrew due to injury, with Fritz leading the score 6-1, 3-0.

This achievement marks the fifth consecutive time that an American tennis player has reached the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam tournament. It’s the longest streak for American men since the run of six consecutive participations that extended from the 2002 US Open to the 2004 Australian Open.

It’s not the way I wanted to advance, I was excited to play against Jordan today, I was excited to play good tennis. It’s sad… he’s been struggling here, playing five-set matches, I respect him for coming out… I feel sorry for him and I hope he gets better.

Fritz and Ben Shelton, who qualified for the round of 16 after his straight-sets victory on Saturday, are the only Americans left in the men’s singles draw. In the last 15 years, only two American tennis players have reached the Wimbledon semi-finals: Sam Querrey in 2017 and John Isner in 2018. In the quarterfinals, Fritz, runner-up at the US Open last year, will face Russian Karen Khachanov, seeded number 17. Khachanov reached his second Wimbledon quarterfinal after defeating Kamil Majchrzak with a score of 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

To be honest, today was a great performance, at least on my part.

Karen Khachanov
Khachanov has been a Grand Slam semi-finalist twice, at the 2022 US Open and the 2023 Australian Open. He was a quarter-finalist at the All England Club four years ago. Majchrzak, ranked 109th, was playing a fourth-round match in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Before Wimbledon, he had a streak of six consecutive losses in Grand Slams. Other scheduled men’s matches were Carlos Alcaraz against Andrey Rublev, and Nicolas Jarry against Cam Norrie.
