Cancelled ceremony honoring Mary Pierce at Roland Garros
PARIS – The Roland Garros organization announced the cancellation of the ceremony in honor of Mary Pierce, the last French tennis player to win the title at the prestigious tournament 25 years ago. The ceremony was scheduled for Thursday, between the women’s semifinals of the Grand Slam on clay. The organizers reported that Pierce will not be able to attend due to “personal reasons.”
Pierce’s title at the 2000 French Open remains the most recent in singles for a French player, male or female, at Roland Garros. The 50-year-old tennis player also won the doubles title that year. Her other Grand Slam singles title was at the 1995 Australian Open, and she also contributed to France winning two Fed Cup titles.
The ceremony aimed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his title at Roland Garros and his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2019, according to the tournament organizers.
