Leylah Fernandez Conquers the Japan Open

Tennis player Leylah Fernandez was crowned champion of the Japan Open WTA this Sunday, after defeating young prospect Tereza Valentova with a score of 6-0, 5-7 and 6-3. This victory represents the fifth title in Fernandez’s career.

In her eighth final as a professional, the 2021 US Open runner-up demonstrated initial dominance, winning the first set in just 29 minutes. However, Valentova reacted in the second set, equalizing the match after breaking Fernandez’s serve in the twelfth game.

The decisive set saw Fernandez, currently ranked 27th in the world, convert a crucial break in the fourth game. Subsequently, the Canadian managed to resist the Czech player’s comeback attempt, thus securing her second title of the season, following her victory at the D.C. Open WTA 500 in July.
