Djokovic: Last Dance at Wimbledon?
London – The question about Novak Djokovic’s future has become a recurring theme, especially in Grand Slam tournaments. Every time he appears, the question is inevitable: Will this be his last participation? Saturday at Wimbledon was no different. The Serbian tennis player’s response, as usual, left the possibility open. “Could it be my ‘last dance’?”, Djokovic repeated, using the reporter’s phrase. “I’m not sure, just as I’m not sure about Roland Garros or any other Grand Slam I play.” Djokovic, 38 years old and winner of 24 Grand Slam titles, offered a mix of caution and realism. “My wish is to play several more years. I would love to be physically and mentally healthy to continue playing at the highest level. That is the goal. But you never know at this stage.” The All England Club could be the ideal setting for Djokovic to add another Grand Slam title, which would allow him to reach 25, an unprecedented mark in men’s tennis.Djokovic has won seven championships at the grass court tournament and came very close to adding an eighth title, but lost the 2023 and 2024 finals against Carlos Alcaraz. In the last six editions of the tournament, Djokovic has reached the final, winning in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022. His most recent defeat at Wimbledon was in the quarter-finals in 2017. The questions about Djokovic’s future are reminiscent of those asked of legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams before their farewells. Although he hasn’t won a Grand Slam title in over a year and a half, Djokovic proved he’s still a formidable competitor. He reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January and the final of Roland Garros this month. Furthermore, he won a gold medal for Serbia at the Paris Olympics, defeating Alcaraz. “These tournaments give me the biggest boost,” Djokovic affirmed. “I like how I feel now, physically. As for tennis, I’ve been playing well in training. Obviously, it’s completely different when you start a tournament. I will try to have a very good tournament and go as far as possible.” And maybe I’ll be back in 2026.“I would probably agree that Wimbledon could be the best opportunity, because of the results I’ve had, because of how I feel, how I play at Wimbledon. I just need that extra mental boost and the motivation to play my best tennis at the highest level.”
